Today is International Women’s Day so todays post is dedicated to all my female readers. I am of course aware of the reasons behind IWD, to celebrate how far we have come since the suffrage movement of the late nineteenth century and the solidarity of Women worldwide campaigning for equal opportunties and rights for women but I had no idea there was a day dedicated to us! Dont get me wrong, I am not a staunch feminist and have no urge to burn my bra and be treated like one of the lads but I do quite like the idea of celebrating femininity and girl power. I am sure IWD means a lot of different things for different people but I am going to think of it as a day to pay tribute to the women who first stood up and fought for our right to vote and for those who continually strive for equal working pay and conditions for women today.
I am sure, as a woman working in the Sex Industry there are going to be a few who say I undo all the work of the suffragettes by allowing myself to be exploited and that I have no right to sing their praises. But, I actually believe that women working in porn are the ones doing the exploiting to a certain degree. We are using our bodies and sexual power to make money and who are the majority of our customers? MEN…..so who are the ones being taken advantage of here? I know it sounds a little cold and that I am saying female sex workers are heartless, money grabbing users but the fact is that the majority of us enjoy our “work” but would we do it for free? Probably not and THATS why I cant accept the claims of female exploitation in the Sex Industry.
It is also my opinion that our harshest critics and ultimately, worst enemies are in fact women themselves. I know only too well of the back stabbing and bitchiness that goes on between girls in and out of the porn world and today would be a good day to put down our weapons and stand united in our celebration of who we are. Fat, thin, black, white, career woman or stay at home mum, to quote the ladies in that L’oreal advert, WE ARE ALL WORTH IT and the sooner you embrace that the better your life will be. Dont waste precious time focussing on what others are doing or what you dont have and would like, focus on gaining and maintaining self respect and the respect of your fellow females will follow.
